Pocket door

Hi all,

I am installing a pocket door 28" with an overall span of 56". The wall this is going in is a load bearing wall. There is a top plate of solid wood 4x4. Could that suffice the load of the opening or do I need to put a header in also above the opening. Thanks

Is there currently a door there now?

What is above the load bearing wall? A hot tub or other heavy item?

The Door Size Currently There Is 30 Inch Opening. No Hot Tub Or Heavy Items Above In That Area.

a 4x8 or sandwiched 2x8s are legal to span 60 inches in most areas.
