Please help: Rotten sill replacement

Upon removeing the siding on the gable end of my house I found the bottom plate and sill to be rotted and a two foot piece cut out. The wall is 20' long and is only sitting on 3 footings ( 1 every 10'). Now I was told since it's a gable wall that I can just pull out the rotted sill, digg a few more footings and replace the wood with PT 2x4s. I'm not to sure about this but money is tight so i cant afford to hire anyone so I'm stuck doing it myself. Could someone please help with any info.
