Plastic vapor barrier
 
A contractor want to install 6 mill plastic vapor barrier over the gravel in my crawl space. Is this a good idea?

It's the first step in a process. It would help if you mentioned what the crawl space was related to. You didn't call in this guy for just a crawlspace.

If you plan on going into the crawl space later no because when you crawl or walk across it the gravel will poke holes in the plastic. I would spread sand over the gravel then put down the vapor barrier.

Ditto on the sand, but use a heavier plastic and seal it to the walls with Acoustical Sealant or equal.
Tape the joints. Add sand to the top of it so it doesn't float.

I would lean more towards a building wrap like typar or tyvec

He is lookong for a vapor Barrier and not a moisture barrier (aka Typar) the allows moisture vapor yo go through it. I would suggest 10 mil poly and not 6 mil since it is more resistant to puncturing and the abuse it could get in the future when people crawl over it.

TuTuff is apparently much tougher than visqueen. I bought something like it, maybe TuffNuff (?) and it is sure tough stuff compared to visqueen. BTW, and counter to our intuition, the holes in the floor plastic from walking on it don't matter a lot. Martin Holladay wrote about this on greenbuildingadvisor.com, and the reason has to do w/ the lack of pressure differential between the floor and the space. The walls have a differential, so seal them; the floor does not. That is why it does not matter that screed pins, etc, poke holes in your below-slab VB. (Someone check out Martin's info, and let me know if I mis-remember that, OK? Thanks.) j

we use 20mm when sealing up crawl spaces likely to receive traffic,,, 6mil forces us to enter apron stores :furious: & we do try to steer clear of them :laughing:
