picture window flashing and 2x12 problem

the new 6x6' casement windows i installed in my new addition have the install flange and are screwed in now. what material can i use to flash them now besides tyvek wrap at 70 bucks for a tiny roll? tar paper ok? 50 mil poly i have a huge roll of? i would also like some opinions on how people cover up the top perimeter 2x12s inside and out of my new 6x6" post construction? paint them? coil them? $$$$ there.... what do NORMAL people do to fill the 2xwhatever gap besides build the whole wall out with 2x6s and then have 10" or so thick walls to insulate? anyone? tnkx!

Your windows should be flashed with something that adheres and bonds to the tyvek that I recall that you wrapped your house with. There's no way to do that with tar paper or poly.

The tyvek flex wrap is probably the best product you can use, but yes it is pricey. There are some off-brand adhesive flashing rolls that are a little cheaper.

If you go cheap on this you're guaranteed to have water infiltration.

I don't understand the 2x12 part of the question. Can you post a picture or elaborate?

i saw a "this old house" type website where these guys were using what looked like tar paper, (black with stripes) so i'm wondering the best/cheapest way to go and if that's even legal? my wife took the camera with her today for 4H so i'll have to wait to get a shot of the 2x12"s that run around the perimeter inside and outside and support the trusses for the new roof i have. my inside wall on 2 sides of the new dining room have them and i do not like them exposed. outside, on the gable (done to tyvek) you have the 3/4 plywood AND the 2x12 thickness from the 6x posts to flush the wall out.... how the heck can i do this? it'll look weird if i don't do SOMEthing.....
