Penetrating Metal Studs

What kind of nails, screws, drill bits do I need to go throuhg metal studs?

Self-tapping screws will do fine - regular metal bits will also be fine.

Really? Becuase I've tried drilling through and drill just freezes when it hits the stud.

Well, I totally thought this thread was gonna be about something different!

But anyway, I think you just need to get a more powerful drill. Let me know if that helped!

I haven't done much metal stud work, but isn't there a big punch that you can just knock holes with for electric? I heard they are really fast and have a set back so you can line up your holes real easy. I'll look on the net and get back to you. ( sorry just realized this isn't in the electric forum. anyway the punch is still cool!)

Freezes?! What kind of drill are you using? Did you get it at Target (those damn Buffalo tools)?

I think his drill is just wussy, too. But it's probably not Buffalo.....I don't think they make any electrified stuff.

I'm guessing that the cheesy stud is pushing away from the drywall, happens to me all of the time.
I use a straight seal pick, like an awl only smaller and not to be confused with dental tools sold as seal picks. It's max dia. is about 1/8". Drive it in with a hammer just enough to pierce the stud, follow with the screw of your choice. I prefer #8 sheet metal screws.

I guess the questions need to be asked - What gauge stud are you using? And how large of a hole?
