Patio doors/prefab houses

Hi,

Can i install patio doors by taking out an existing window and cutting the lower section out with my disc-cutter?? Can i drill and secure the frame, and is it pretty much the same as cutting out brickwork or will it compomise any stability?

Cheers

Darren

What is the construction of the house, PRC for example? Have you got a photo?

Hi stuart,

I think i have attached a pic, let me know if i've not. Does PRC mean prefabricated rough cast?? the house is 50's or 60's.

Cheers

Hi Darren,
PRC stands for precast re-inforced concrete. Is this house is in the UK?
There were literally hundreds of different types of system built houses thown up just after the war. Yours looks a bit like a Wates house, but it is difficult to be sure from the photo. It's probably an ex council house, so they will be able to help you.
You need to find out the type of construction to determine the best way to do the job. Replacing windows and doors is notifiable work to Building Control now unless carried out by a FENSA or similar registered firm.

May want to first check the rough opening height of your window as it appears to be 4"-5" shorter than your door......

Be safe, Gary
