Patio cover construction

We are getting bids to build an attached patio cover. It will be cedar with a shingled roof. Is it best to attach the structure using a gable design or with a ledger/header board mounted to the house? We have two different contractors telling us their's is better than the others.

Thanks for your input.

It's really an architectural question. Both are acceptable ways of covering a patio, but which ones goes better with the house. If you have shed dormers a ledger attachement might look nice. If you have steep gables everywhere, a gable roof would go better. What about runoff from rain? Snow? Will the rooflines from either be obstructing the view? With a ledger, will there be enough pitch?
