Paneling without batons

I need some advice. I want to put paneling on the lower half of a wall but don't have room for wooden batons to fix the paneling onto. I was thinking of fixing the paneling to the wall using an adhesive or a sealant but i would like to know which would be best.
Could someone please help soon as i am nearing that part of my project.
Thanx.

Paneling

Liquid nails will work like a charm, make sure the wall is sealed or painted. Naked plaster may come loose after time.

Is the wall sheetrock? Are there studs behind it? Personally, I would be inclined to nail it to any studs underneath the sheetrock to make it easier if you or a future owner doesn't like it anymore.
