paint over brick ?

How adviseable would it be to paint over brick on an older home? are there special primers, prep, or kinds of paint that must be used? What about the liquid siding products? What is the life expectancy of paint on bricks? What do you do down at the foundation line- paint down below the soil and build up the flower beds? Thanks for any advice!

Painting Brick

Marlene,

A good power wash is usualy the only thing that is needed to clean the grime and loosen up small debris from the brick and mortar. Any good paint or hardware store will have brick paint and it will last almost forever. If you change your mind down the road though, it is almost impossible to completely remove. The foundation can be painted with a good concrete paint but beware of building up flower beds at the wall as sometimes this can lead to water seepage in the basement. Your grade should always be sloped away from the wall for water run off.

Wa************, or have it done.
Prime it. It will take a lot, because the brick will soak up primer like a sponge, and paint it. Paint sticks to brick so well, you will never believe.
