Now that I've finished building my deck, I'm trying to build the staircase. The problem I'm having is that my run is 17 inches and my rise is 6. I'm using composite decking material so my spacing is 12". My staircase is 14feet wide, and 3 steps high and I wanted to connect it back to the deck at the ends of the staircase back to the face of the deck. Ok, so the problem I'm having is that I didnt want to build separate "platforms" for each step, and I cant find risers cut out of 2x14's , anyone out there with any idea's?
I don't understand? When figuring out stairs you divide floor to floor measurement by whatever number to equal a rise not higher than 7 13/16". Also you can not cut a stairjack more than 10"s for the run. I haven't encountered this in a while but I heard under the new code you can't have a tread less than 11" (might be hear say). So these are your only options for stairs with 2x12. Even the the pre-cut ones at big box r us.
So you may be building landings for ever tread if that is the appeal you are looking for.
you could always laminate some treated plywood together to make a deeper stringer. I would think that to be very stong steps then. as far as the 11" you need to remember the 1" nosing. I always use 2- 2x6 for deck treads.
