I have an old ongoing thread about my kneewalls/venting and problems ive come across in that part of my house, and I posted about this in that thread also, last few night's I've started to jump into the repair work and when I pulled up the ply decking the first thing that grabbed my attention were the 2x4 studs that make up my exterior wall being notched to except and band for the I beam to rest on,not sure if im using the propper term's, those Ibeams make up the floor for my second floor bedroom about my garage.Im curious as to whether this is a standard practice?, it just dont seem right to me. Any feedback, tips , or input is greatly appreciated

Looks like they notched the studs for a ledger to rest the I-joists on as in balloon frame construction. Not very common today. If it's done right, there is nothing really wrong with it. There should be fire blocking in every stud cavity.

was fire blocking installed at the wall to floor connection, such as a 2x4 horizontal plate?

GBrackins: yes in every cavity at the bottom of the 2x4 "ledger", So im thinking that puts it about 3 inch's below the garage ceiling level. Any thing I should do? Over the year's I've had the house, different neighbor's have told me about a tree coming through the roof of this very room, but dont remember any details, last night I got to the last 7 or 8 feet of this project and think I found where it happened, the last 3 joist's arent Ibeams, they are 2x material, Ibeams are 12" tall, these are 11 1/2", so a half inch gap at bottom, with some half inch ply slide underneath loosely, I dont know what to think about this
