one more question on connecting new addition to old!
this question will perhaps sound incredibly naive but, here goes. i've assumed that my 2 story 18X18' addition (centered on a 35' side wall of the original structure) would require a newly framed wall butted up against the original structure; resting on a new block foundation wall abutting the original fieldstone foundation. this is at least in part due to the fact that the addition floors will drop down 2' from the original house floors (i'll save you the details but this is a given at this point) and therefore the joists will not line up. an architect friend reviewing my plans said that there was no need for the newly framed wall abutting the original. I'm pretty sure i'll need a new foundation wall against the old to support the new top plate given the different floor levels. and I guess I can build a cripple wall up 2" to match the height of the original floor? but wouldn't a newly framed wall abutting the old make tying the two together a lot easier? essentially two independent structures abutted, and tied together?
