Old Footing and slab on grade - is it a crack or expansioin joint
The slab is approximately 50 years old, and I'm replacing a few rotten wall studs along the perimeter of one edge of the slab.
I found what, at first glance appeared to be a crack just inside the 2x4 PT sill. The crack was 7' long, 1/8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. Upon further probing it looked too even to be a crack, and it ended as a perfect corner - where the foundation jogged.
Is it possible that where stem wall of the footing rises up to meet the sill it is only 4 inches wide, and the slab was poured separately allowing for an expansion gap? Has anyone ever seen a footing that might be similar to this one? See diagram...
