OK to lay cedar over old decking?

Hello all, I have an old deck painted, a bit moldy, and instead of tearing it out, i'd like to put cedar decking over it. Is this ok? Can I criss cross the
seems? or do they have to run in parallel? Any comments on prepping the old wood would be more than welcome. Thank you all in advance...

You are just begging for water to get trapped in there and rot the @$#%#$ out of your deck if you don't pull up the old decking.
