Notch attic joists?

I just ran one run of structured cable (2RG6, 2Cat5e) pretty much the length of my attic. Now I tried to keep out of normal pathways but there is a couple locations where the wire goes right through these pathways.

So that it does not get stepped on and possibly broken in the future is it OK to notch out groove so that I can slip the wire into it and then install one of those metal stud plates over where the groove is?
