Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so I have no clue where this even goes...

So I came home to this in my condo unit... I've done only simple lightweight home improvement projects so I'm at a lost of what this piece is even called or what kind of specialist I should contact or what I should expect should this thing comes crashing down. Previous owner said it was covering a beam that ran through the ceiling, which I can see slightly. Looks like one of the nails came loose so the corner is falling off. How would I go about putting this thing back up?

Any help is appreciated.

Some context, I'm on the 11th(top floor) of a highrise, this peice sits above t he kitchen's breakfast bar and it touches but may or may not connect to the exterior wall of the building.

Thanks!

What you have is called a tray ceiling I believe.
Only way to fix it is to cut out the sheetrock and find out why it came detatched.
Most likely to short a screw, the wrong screws, or they were attached in the wrong area so there's nothing to attach them to.

Thanks joecaption, I did a search on google for some instructions and didn't find much besides that I need to look for taping/mud. Going to home depot to see what I can get to do a temporary fix so that it won't fall off completely for now.

Some sites were recommending to find a specialist, what would this category fall under?

yah, no need to pull it down, but you should want to know WHY it's coming loose.
obviously wasnt secured well enough.

to start, cut out a 2'x2' section from the loose corner. this will give enough room to hopefully see whats going on.
This would also be a good time to make sure other portions of the ceiling are secured sturdily.
Check to make sure none of the structural wood is cracked, split, or broken.

with any luck it's just some stripped out screws, and you can re-secure it with some heavy duty screws.
Be sure to hit the beams with the new screws.

Well, stuck a camera through the crack to see what's up, and it looks like 2 nails are loose, and there's only 3 of them holding up that one long side. Also it looks like the interior is some sort of metal bracket housing a lot of wiring.

If it is just nailed, you might want to temporary hold it to the ceiling with a 2x4 while reattaching it, there is a possibility it could come completely down unless it is secured temporary.

And if that corner was not secured properly you can bet the whole thing was not secure properly. You can't just screw it back up. You have to screw it to something that will hold the weight, like the floor joist above, not just the ceiling drywall.
