nosing on stair treads
I seem to have misplaced my code book. My wife probably stacked it someplace and forgot where she put it because that's what wives do.
Anyway, I digress. Is nosing on stair treads required? I'm building new basement stairs and my landing will be running a bit short even without the nosing.

nosing on stair treads
Seems to depend on location. I know in some areas of Alberta Canada they do not have to have it. We always went 1.25"
Ask your building inspector. |

nosing on stair treads
Found the code online, the minimum is 3/4" unless the tread is 11". Mine is only 9" which is code in Massachusetts.

nosing on stair treads
dont forget. code is usually the MINIMUM.
here we have to have a nosing or the riser must be angled back away from the edger of the tread |

nosing on stair treads
I understand about the minimum. The house was built in 1925 and only 1480 sq feet. I'm maximizing all the available space and with that comes the most compact staircase that code will allow.

The MA code nosing requirements are the same as what is shown on the diagram below (not more than 1-1/2" inch projection).
However, MA Code: R311.7.4.1 thru R311.7.4.2 cite different riser & tread depth codes than what is shown on this diagram. ![]() From This Site http://inspectapedia.com/interiors/Stair_Treads.htm
