Nook Has No Siding On Exterior


I'm wondering how well this painted wood exterior is going to hold up against the weather (see attached photos). The rest of the home exterior has siding (or brick), so I'm not sure why this area has nothing but painted wood.

Would simply painting this area every other year suffice to keep it in good shape? Note in the photo that some of the (vertical) wood is splitting a teeny bit. Perhaps I'll fill it with caulk before painting the next time.

What would you do to keep this area in good condition for the long run?

Continue the siding around the bay.
