Non load bearing wall door header?

Ok, I think I could use some advice. I am installing a 12' milgard vinyl window/sliding door assembly into a non load bearing wall and wondering if i need to do anything special since I wasn't planning on any header simply cripples above door to top plate. I don't want door to sag and exterior siding is in place in fact door has been installed for 3 months but have not sheetrocked interior yet. Any advice?

With an opening that wide, i would add more that cripples, even in non bearing wall.

I have trusses above and this wall where 12' slider is installed jogs in 8' from exterior of house. Absolutely no load above wall.

The last thing you want is something creating a problem with the operation of the door - and with that long a span, I would put a decent header there.

A header may not be necessary but be sure you give yourself something to nail trim to and screw window treatments to... Hitting a couple of cripples for a twisted piece of trim or trying to get drywall to hold a heavy drapery rod will be much easier if you plan for it now.

Even though it's a nonload bearing I'd worry that a span that long could have some sag just from the weight of the drywall and framing above it. Couldn't hurt to put a double 2x6 header in for insurance and would also give you more nailing surface for trim and curtains.

I'd put a header in too
I usually use a 2x10 or 2x12 header assembly & then install the window under the header

I just reread the op... 12' SPAN... Put in at least a doubled 2x10 header and don't forget the jack studs. Otherwise you will likely have cracked drywall at best and poor door operation at worst. For what you are spending on the door don't take the chance to save $60-$80...

Ok. the exterior of wall is finished with osb then hardi siding but interior is unfinished. Can I cut a pocket to allow doubled up 2x10 header to be inserted from the inside of the room that way I don't have to remove any exterior finish?
