newbie bolt question

Hi everyone,

Simple question, are "through bolts" the same as hex bolts? I am reading my code requirements for decks and they mention to use "through bolts".
But today I was at Home Depot and in their hardware section they did not have anything called through bolts. Does it go buy a different name perphaps hex bolt?
Thanks!

newbie bolt question

A through bolt is any bolt which passes completely through all the thickness or layers of material which it holds together. It will also have a nut and washer assembly or you might have to purchase them separately.
Hex bolts are also known as hex cap screws or machine bolts and they can be used as “through bolts”

newbie bolt question

Hex bolts, Plow bolts and Carriage bolts are all examples of 'through' bolts.
Lag bolts are not 'through' bolts unless they are too long.

All you need to be sure of on your through bolt is that it is thick enough compared to the length. For example, I would you a 1/2" bolt if it was 6" long.
