New Shower and Tub Questions

In my bathroom renovation,my contractor needs a shower pan and he is going to build a tile enclosure. We got a $100 fiberglass shower base at HD. We're going to build a tile surround.

Do we need the waterproof membrane underneath? What goes underneath the pan? Durock? Should the floor tile be built under the shower? What do we need to look for as they are doing the work?

With another bathroom, we took out an old fiberglass tub. We may put in an iron tub or another fiberglass one. Pros and cons of these? Do we need additional support for an iron tub?

What do you think of caulkless surrounds?

New Shower and Tub Questions

Fiber glass shower pans are usually set into a mortar bed so the thing doesn't flex when you stand in it.

No liner needed under the pan.

Pan is set on the subfloor---the new floor covering goes in after the pan--this hides any gap between the pan and subfloor.

As to your bathtub question-----cast iron will give you the longest life while looking good.

Fiberglass looses its shine within a few years if used regularly.
No special support is needed ---just follow the manufacturers instructions.---Mike---
