New post caps - How to attach them?

Hi guys,

I have repainted my deck and replaced the old post decks with the ones below, 4x4.

Now, the wood post size is 3"5/8 therefore the caps are bigger, (this is one of the things I'll never get used in NA, you buy anything in wood, like, studs, posts etc, you buy a size and you get another ) so...

shall I fill in the gap with silicon or what's best?

Thank you!
Alex

Post caps are available to fit a wood post correctly---you might be best off looking for the correct sized caps-----

It's sold right next to the caps.
The reason it's loose is any pressure treated lumber varies in size.

Perhaps there are 3"5/8, but I could not find them.

Some are made to cap a wooden 4 X 4, others are made to fit over a vinyl post cover so there bigger.

This makes sense to me, but the difference is big, actually the old ones were 3"5/8 but they were 12 years old and in bad condition.
As you can see, I bought a very basic cap, but as mentioned above, I doubt it exists in 3"5/8 size.

I'll look for the vinyl cement, it seems to be the best option.

Thank you!
Alex

most of the decks i build now get a vinyl hand rail system.. the post caps are slighltly oversized and will come off on their own.. to counter that i put several large globs of whites poly butyl caulking on it which acts as adhesive.. exterior silicone doesnt grab as well as the polybutyl type such as lepages "quad" or mulcos "flextra" or "flex 9000"

Will this cement adhere to the wood posts? From the description it seems to be done to work with vinyl posts.
