new porch to concrete side walk

Hey yall,
Ok 1st, i am building in Oklahoma, i'm not a lisenced contractor but do build extreamly well built decks and porches. Here real soon i Will be building a 16x32 wooden porch w/wrap around roof to cover his 4' side walk about 78' and the porch i am to build, the concrete is my problem. He wants the deck to come off level with the side walk. Heres my questions, should i make this a free standing deck with a small canatlever exten to meet up with. the concrete? or is there a better way like actually tieing the rim joist to concrete? i think not but im no pro though. if building this free standing how far away from the concrete should i stay when digging my footers and leveling out the ground to be able to put any porch there? or does it not matter can i digg all the way p to the sidewalk then down below a few inche to give me room to put in my porch? i know this probably sounds like a big bunch of crap and im sorry if i lost you just lookin for some advice. if some one could tell me how to post a pic i can post a sketch up then maybe the house its self........ THANKS N ADVANCE
