New Front Entry Door

I want to replace my aging Stanly front entry door.

Wife and I want solid wood, but many people are trying to talk us out of it. We want a craftsman style, and think solid wood would fit best.

What are your thoughts on each? Also, if we go solig wood, is this a DIY as a prehung fiberglass would be, or better left to a pro?

There are a lot of fiberglass doors that come really close to looking like a wooden craftsman style door. I would advise against wood. It looks great when it is new, but it will inevitably fade, discolor, potentially get water damaged, etc. If you have a big overhang or porch or something, and the door doesn't get direct contact with moisture and limited sun exposure, then maybe you can get away with real wood. But overall, the hassle just isn't worth it, in my opinion. Fiberglass are maintenance free, insulated really well, don't discolor, fade, warp or rot, etc.

As for installing a wooden entry door. It is doable, but I wouldn't attempt it unless you have a solid set of carpentry skills, good attention to detail and are confident you can tackle any problem that may arise in the install, such as a rotted sill, or having to customize some flashing or something.

New Front Entry Door

Our wood front doors were once gorgeous... then came the direct sun exposure (a stormdoor protected it from the other elements). Giant crack down the middle.... sigh. I am hoping to eventually replace them with fiberglass.....

Here is a nice Masonite craftsman style in a Mahogany color.

It definitely has a craftsman styling to it, but it obviously isn't real wood. We had a Masonite entry door put in last year, and are very happy with it. They aren't cheap though. We had a door and two sidelights put in, and it was around 6k installed.
