new constr, windows not caulked?

hey, i just noticed that the windows in my new house are not caulked. i contacted the builder but the person who called me back told me they weren't supposed to be caulked, but he couldn't give me a convincing answer why. these are standard vinyl windows, and the siding is hardie plank.

does this sound right? thanks for any info!

Try going to the James Hardie website and look at the instructions for your siding.
The lap siding mentions caulking all cut edges.
With the specific instructions in hand, call the builder back and read it very slowly to him.

Windows should be water tight even without siding. Windows should be caulked, period.

As Ron stated, go to the window manufacturer and get their installation instructions.

Yes! Caulk where siding meets window frame. Both vertical sides and bottom. Make sure "weeps" are unobstructed. Top of window should have metel drip flashing installed prior to siding. Flashing is not required if top of window is protected by large roof overhang

...and the ends of the drip cap should be bent over to match the front overlap.

Windows should be installed according to the Manufacturer's recommendations.
They often include a bead of caulking, but not always. Check with them.
