New cedar gazebo. Should I stain or seal?

Just built a cedar gazebo over the weekend. We love the natural look of the cedar and would like to maintain it for as long as we can, without it going gray.

My neighbour says i need to seal it now before too much rain/snow gets to it. Since we want to keep hte natural look should I be looking at a clear sealer? Can you experts recommend me a brand.

Then the other option I have been reading about is to stain the cedar to whatever color we would like, well I kinda like the natural color of it, but hear that stain does a better job then sealer.

A little confused as to what I should do.

If you want to maintain the natural look, you could put a natural stain with UV protectors in it. Check out Consumers Reports, they did a stain comparison last year(June 2010) Behr and Sears Weatherbeater solid stains were the 2 top rated. For semi-transparent, it was Olympic Maximum and Sherwin Williams Woodscapes.

when you say semi transparent, i assume that this is the closest I will get to a clear look ?

Go to their websites and see what's available. "Semi-tranparent" is the manufacturers term. It has less pigment. Maybe they sell an unpigmented version or one that's cedar colored.

I went for transparent on my deck. The cedar just looks fantastic - to the point where you wanna take a bite out of it sometimes. There was no way I was messing with that color.

Chevron Shake and Shingle Oil.

A Chevron heating oil company is the only place you’ll find it. We use it on cedar siding and fences all the time.

The best thing I know of to maintain the “new cedar” look.
