need shade in az

I have a brown stucco wood frame house, just bought in az

summer is coming and have the back patio facing sw, not good. In the afternoon as the sun comes over the peak of the roof, it turns into a blast furnace.

attached is a photo and some dimensions.

I have an idea of attaching landscape timbers to the outside in a three sided frame, two vert, one horiz (or two horiz since they do not come in 14')
attaching lattice to that on the outside, and then hanging roll up sun shades readily available at lowes etc on the inside.

I could just hang a shade suspended to the ceiling[IMG][/IMG] on the inside of the overhand as seen in the second photo of the attachment, that would be easier, but want it more on the outside for more room. Also, the winds here get pretty severe so the idea of the frame, with the lattice and the shade suspended from inside that is preferable.

Any suggestion?

I've never worked with stucco before, don't want to just go drilling and nailing etc.

Also, how do i make sure and comply with local building codes. If I try to sell the house down the road, and have done something not to code, that can be a problem.
