Need Help on buiding a second floor subfloor

I have an octagon shaped great room that is around 22 to 25 feet high. We like the room, however its a lot of space to waste to heat and cool. We have decided to cut the area in half and have an additional 400 sq. feet upstairs. The longest point in the octagon shape is around 21 feet. What I need to know is what is the best material to make the beams for that distance. My first thought was 2 x 12 x 20, but think there ought to be some other material that can span that distance and be lighter in weight as well as thickness. Can anyone give me some ideas on this. thanks b
