Nailing 2x6 onto stucco for shaded overhang?

The guy that owned the house before me nailed 2x6's along the stucco wall so he could make a over hang for shade, the wood is old and cracking,
I want to get new wood and prime it and paint it and install it in place of the old wood, the wall is out in the open and rain hits it, is there any procedure needed to be taken so rain cant get into the nail holes

Any Tips?

Thanks, Doug

Whenever I want to keep the weather out, I use silicon caulking. It always seems to work!

I agree with Tom, that board should be treated no different than if it was a deck ledger attached to the house.
