Nail bleeds on white cedar siding

My home is sided with unfinished white cedar board and batten. I would like to stain it (it is now 5 years old), but my builder used the wrong nails and the house is covered in black nail bleeds (streaks). Residing is not an option, nor is removing and replacing all the nails. Should I simply try to match the stain to the streaks (not my favourite option!), or are there alternatives?

I would appreciate any light you could shine on this topic. Thanks!

You may now be stuck with having to seal every nail with oil base primer and painting now instead of staining. If not the nails will just keep on rusting.

That's a new one on me.

Steel and Cedar don't mix. Hot dipped galvanized is fine with cedar if your not in a salt environment (on the Coast), electrostatic galvanized are worthless though.

I'd take the prime and paint a step further and countersink and fill the holes first, if the gun didn't already do the countersinking for ya.

If they knew it was going to be stained then stainless steel should have been used.

There also should not have been any exposted nails in the siding only the trim.

I can't think of any other siding detail that has more trim than B&B.

It sounds to me that it was all gun nailed, hopefully Baerg will post some pictures.
