Question

My contractor wants me to get a "Standard Penetration Test Boring"...what's that??

Hey guys,

I am adding a new bedroom and a attached 2 car garage to my home in Miami, Florida. My contractor is telling me that I need to get 2 Standard Penetration Test Borings (one where the bedroom will be and another where the garage will be)...total cost $750. I have no problem doing this, I'm just wondering if this is something that is required and what the purpose is??

Thanks for any help!

The purpose is to tell you what kind of soil you have in the area of the addition - natural?, fill?, sand?, clay? and the strength. Also the water table. It can help tell whether you may need an unusual footing or soil preparation.

In Florida, it may even tell you about a sinkhole.

A good contractor likes to know what he will be building on.

The 750 will cover your a$$ and your contracters too. Not many areas of the U.S. have as many diverse soil conditions as florida also, as here in N.J. it can tell you if your building on a dump.
