Mounting a bathroom fan on a vertical wall?

I'm building a three piece bathroom in my basement. I'm having difficulty finding a fan that will fit in the ceiling rafters because I've got heating ducts in the way. I could easily fit it on the back wall but I'm not sure if that would provide enough sucking power. I'm mostly concerned about venting steam from the shower.

Will it work well enough if it's installed on a vertical wall or would I be better off finding something that will fit into the ceiling?

One in the ceiling would be be best. Panisonic makes some where the motor can be mounted remotly.

There are fans designed for vertical mounting, but I've never seen any except in hotel rooms.

Ive done this a couple times. Google " in line fans". They're the same as a radon system fan.
