Most reasonable house plan design

I am going to build a new house, in the 1300 - 1450 sq ft. range. I am trying to find the most reasonable floor plan to build and to maintain. Any suggestions?

Most people would say a one story ranch type would be best

There is a series of books specifically addressing design and construction of small houses. We have two of them, I can't quite remember the titles, but they are something like "The Not So Big House". Excellent books, they discuss in detail how to make a small house feel big, and work well. Lots of pictures and examples showing a wide range of designs, from totally traditional to hypermodern.

Sarah Susanka really knows her stuff. Her books are well worth reading.
