moisture problem at my basement fireplace

I have a brick fireplace in the basement. there is moisture problem at the base of the brick. My chimney is falling apart the bricks are completely falling apart. What is more likely? the chimney leaking water all the way to the basement floor or a foundation leak behind the fireplace?

Both are possible. It is easy to check the cap on top of the chimney, and repair or replace it. Water leaking around the footer is a bit more difficult to fix. Check that downspouts and gutters are working and that downspouts direct water at least 6' away from the foundation. Grading around the house should do the same thing.

We have a house built 1860 in northern upstate catskills mountains and was built on rock foundation. We have some flooring sitting directly on the rock, therefore un even floors and moisture is a problem. I am going to try to fix this next year with as little reconstruction as possible does anyone know how to fix the foundation on rock problem.
