Which moisture barrier to use for replacement siding
I will be replacing my ABTCO siding on the worst wall of my home soon with Hardi or Nichiha cement board. Both require a moisture barrier and I would like to know which one is best? There is Tyvek, Weather Smart, Typar and Hardi's product which are nonwovens, some coated but some not and there are also cheap woven options that are available as well; which are going to do the best job? Both Tyvek and Hardi's product only have a 10-year warranty but the siding on top of them has a 30-year or lifetime warranty; how will that work if the moisture barrier fails?
The best job is rain screen: http://www.greenhomebuilding.com/pdf/RainScreen.pdf
I would suggest Typar after builder's paper: http://www.umass.edu/bmatwt/publicat..._barriers.html
http://www.typar.com/pdfs/Typar_vs_Tyvek.pdf No matter what you use, it's in the application.
Be safe, Gary
