Metal Lath

We are installing stone veneer around our fireplace. Everything I've read says when installing metal lath it should feel rough when running your hand from top to bottom. Our Lath is paper backed. Everything I've read about paper backed lath says when installing it start at the bottom right of the wall. The pictures I've seen show the paper overhanging on the top and right side of the lath. The problem is when I position the lath with the paper overhanging on the top and right it's smooth when running my hand across it going down the wall and rough when running my hand up the wall. Which way is correct.

I'd guess the roughness is to help hold the adhesive.
