max hole in 2x8 floor joist

Hi Guys/Gals,

I'm currently building a new home and need too install a cable/telephone "raceway" in the ceiling in order to be able to freely pull cable/telephone wires. This is too allow me to easily upgrade or replace damaged cables from the outside of my home were the Cable/Telephone providers place there wires too the middle of my home were I have all my cable/telephone termination points are located.

My Question is I would like to install a 3/4 inch raceway in the ceiling and I have to drill holes through all of my 2x8 floor joists in my home......what is the max hole size I can drill safely? I only need a 1 inch hole and I live in Canada if that matters.

Thanks,

Steve

Check with your local Inspector, they may have something like this: http://www.ladbs.org/faq/info%20bull...20notching.pdf

Be safe, Gary

Thanks Gary, in everything and everywhere I have been reading. I'll be safe with a 1 1/4" and keep it towards the ends of the joists not the middle.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Actually, the middle of the joist is best, not the ends. In the middle of the joist, the forces are concentrated on the top and bottom faces. Think of it like an I beam.
