Make a Victorian handicap accessible

Hello everybody. I have a doosie of a problem I'm working on, and I have my hat in my hand asking this question. I'd like to ask the entire community here to think if they've ever seen this or come across this:

I have a life long friend whose husband got cold cocked by a serious health event this year, and they have to try and find a way to make a older house (Victorian I believe) handicap friendly (wheelchair, ramp, etc). I'm going to be getting some photos in a day or two, but for now, does any know of anyone else who converted a Victorian for H/C access?

I already know the requirements. I'm more interested in hearing about or seeing what other folks have done to Victorians. She's concerned that a half-way job will imprison her hubby in a room or two.

Any and all suggestions and ideas will be brought to her attention. If a critical mass of ideas are generated here, I'm going to direct her here to this thread, so don't be shy in saying Hi to Lisa and saying a prayer or two for them.

There are a huge number of things you could do, from increasing the sizes of the interior and exterior doors for wheelchair access, to a "curb-less" shower transition to lower tables and making room under cabinets for ease of access.
This is a residence so there are no "prescriptive" or Federal Guidelines that you are required to follow for ADA if that is part of your inquiry.
Could you be more specific as to his needs?
