Loose Newel Post

Hi All..

my newel post is loose. Before i show the pictures.. please realize i didn't do this.. the previous owner butchered it so no wonder its loose. all i did was remove the stair railing to get some furniture up. honest.

Got an ideas how i can secure the newel post back into place? access from the bottom is not really possible.

I was thinking of just random driving some TimberLOK 5" screws into direction where i THINK might exist some structural framing.

Should have been more careful.
It'll never look like it did.
