Lifting beam for new columns duplex 1908

duplex center beam needs new columns under 6 x 8 beam. Is there an easier way to lift beam tp support than cutting up alot of 6x6 for cribing?

Can you not use a couple of jacks to lift and hold while you are replacing?

Use a jack and 4x4 for like in the photo above but always place an solid support beside it after you have it at the right hight, a 4x4 with wedges in tight will do, to hold to load if the jack fails or leaks. Hate to do all your repairs and find out the jack leaked and your 2" lower than planned ;)
