Let's talk about privacy fences!

Howdy,

I am getting ready to do a bout a 100' run of privacy fence 9' tall between me and the neighbors.

I am content on doing a batten style fence. I would rather butt joint the pickets and run a 1x2 over the gap. Should I be worried about the 1x2 splitting? The alternative I would do is a leaving a gap between pickets and over lap with a full picket about 1 1/2'' on each side. Seems like a waste of material over 100' feet. Thoughts?

Here is my plan for the frame. Use 4x4x12' posts, set ~ 3' deep in concrete 8' on center, use a 2x12x8' for a rot board, and 2x4x8 mounted vertically between posts. All treated.

I want the rot boards to meet in the middle of each post. I plan on starting with the first rot board installed flush to the outside of the first post and ending in the middle of the second post, then they all should meet in the middle down the line.

As far as the 2x4 cross braces, I see a lot of those done in my parts between the posts, not butt jointing in front. How is this typically done? Are all the cross braces cut down bc. the distance isn't 8' between the posts? Seems like extra work, what is the benefit besides looks? Rather than using clips I would pocket hole all the cross braces with the KREG . Is that a bad (time consuming) thing to do?

Thanks guys!

Don't use the 'good neighbor' design if you want privacy, this has staggered boards on both sides, and you can see right through it.
Put all the boards on one side and fairly close together.

9' tall...make sure that's even aloud in your area before you start, you may need a permit.

I'd be using 6x6 post for a fence that high.

Only if you like your neighbor.

We just put our fence up. We would rather look at the nice side.

You can (and should) still look at *a* nice side.

Your fence will be set inside of your property line by X feet (check your County laws)... who is going to mow and weed eat on that strip of ground?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Luckily there are no deed restrictions in my area! So I am good there.

The 6x6s are a good idea and while 85% of the fence will be between 2 structures wind will not be as big of an issue. How deep would y'all sink these?

It might be cheaper/stronger (than 6x6 treated) to use galvanized pipe and clips. I need to price those. Thoughts?

Update!!

Sorry for the long lag between posts, but here is an update. I got a good deal on some 24 foot 2 3/8" drill stem (sch40) cut those in half and sunk them about three feet deep, eight feet on center. I used some metal clips to attach the 2x skeleton and went to town with the pickets.

I stained it with water based sherwin williams fence stain, really nice product to work with.

At the end of the fence I angled it down to the approximate finished height. The issue now is tying into this area to run a shorter more decorative fence across the street side of my property perpendicular to the fence that's up now.

The pic below shows where the top rail will tie in, I have a little wiggle room to cheat that top rail up a little, but I'm struggling with how the transition from the angle down to a flat perpendicular top rail, should go. Thoughts?
