I have a portion of lapboard that is beginning to become soft and needs to be repaired. The portion that is soft is approximate 16inches long and 4inches high. The portion of siding that is soft is at the bottom of the house so it is easy to access. My question is, can the soft area be cut out and repaired, with some sort of spackling compound or does the lap area that needs to be replaced have to be removed and replaced with a new piece of siding? I do know of the possible option of cutting a line off of the bottom of the lap and put a trim board along the bottom to "cover" this area. I am looking for for another possible alternative. Thanks!
