landing/stairs Question

I have a breezeway on my house with a door to the front. There was an old poorly constructed landing and stairs in this area that was rotted, so I removed it and am considering replacing it with something similar.

The area is basically an alcove, so the platform is bordered by my house on three sides. The space is 7' across and extends 6' off the house. My question is, if I make the landing so it fills the entire space as the old one did, since ledger boards can be secured on all three walls, do any footers need to be dug?

The one that was there had no ledger boards had no footers. The framework just sat on the top of the old concrete steps underneath, and cinderblocks. Needless to say, it wasn't exactly stable.

Since it did not have a post, that may be the reason it is not there now.

You need support for all corners/sides for it to be stable and last.

Based on your description ("U" shaped area) and span lengths (sides and depth), it seems like it could be possible to attach it to the home, without the need for footings. You would need to poor a concrete pad for the ends of the stair stringers to sit on. Also, the new landing should not be at the same height as the door entrance threshold, there needs to be a "step-down" for drainage.

landing/stairs Question

pkovo -

Disregard my post. You said it was supported on three sides and somehow I was thinking two sides. - Sometimes I have trouble counting!
