Lag bolt vs through bolt?

I am building a play structure using 2x beams and 4x6 posts. I was going to recess through bolts but they don't sell 3/8" x 7" hex head bolts so if I used 8" instead I would have to cut off the excess threads.

Would some of the new engineered lag bolts be a better choice? I was planning on through bolts so I could tighten the bolts as needed.

They do make 7.5" bolts....your just not going to the right places.....in other words, your not going to find them at HD or Lowes.

Depends on what kind of wood your using...the softer it is the more difficult it is for lag bolts to hold. Also depends on where the connections are.

Here is a couple of pics of the 'fort' I made for my kids out of redwood....I used a mixture of both....for the main connections I used bolts....

I'm using PT southern pine.

p.s. Very nice, it has a lot of character. How much head height do you have in that seating area, and did you set the posts in the ground?
