Knee Wall Insulation

I just purchased a cape cod home and the brisk chicago fall has kicked in and the 2nd floor is very cool.

I looked behind the knee walls and the insulation looks pretty old and poorly installed as it is falling out.

I read the dept of energy guide for insulating a knee wall but was hoping to get some real world advice or maybe even some pics.

I do have a 2nd floor bath room with pipes in the knee wall so I want to make sure they are safe for winter.

OK, what is your question? Type of insulation, how to install, or ???

I wanted to know the type and how to install to make sure to leave room for air flow.

“Room for air” --------- not in or on the insulation. Not over or under the knee wall, other than the baffles above. Moving air only in the attic space, cover the wall insulation with foam board or house wrap to protect it from wind-washing. Run the foam tight to the baffles above the wall and in the joist space below the wall. Seal all joints. http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy00osti/26450.pdf

Use anything but low density fiberglass batts which have a convective loop and poor performance.
