Knee wall acess door
1st post here...
I recently finished rocking and painting the upstairs of my cape to make a playroom for the kids and a den.
Here's the problem:
There is a 4ft knee wall down both side of the room. Plenty of storage behind.
There was a 48"X48" access panel in the playroom side of the upstairs. I wanted to keep the opening that big to easily store large items.
Now, the room is painted, carpet is coming in two weeks. I need to close the opening with a door, but I want to make it string enought to handle the kids, and lockable.
I was thinking of using bi-fold closet doors cut to height, or making one big panel on hinges to open into the room.
Any suggestions?? I can post pics if needed.
Thanks in advance.
you could do that Gluing it to a sheet of 1/4" Veneer ply to make it look good......
I've done this many times.
For best appearance, do this.
Get a pre-hung hollow core door, not bored for lockset.
Cut the door, Cut the jamb 1 1/4 longer than the door to allow for
carpeting, plug the bottom of the door, buy a cheap door boring set,
hang and case the door, bore for lockset, mortise for strike-plate,
install keyed lockset to keep the kids out.
You'll probably be out less than $100.00 if you buy a cheap door.
It's not as difficult as it sounds...usually takes about 2 hours:)
I was considering a pre-hung door, but a 48 inch door is kinda big. That's a big swing to open the door. I think I might go with 2 24" peices of sanded hardwood and installing inside, "european" style hinges.Actually the opening is 47" wide.
