Kitchen shelving

I want to hang some shelving in our kitchen, on tiled walls, but have a couple of questions before I start. When I run the electronic stud finder over the tile, it gives me what seem to be strange readings. Will a stud finder function reliably on tile?

When I find the studs, I assume I'm going to drill holes in the tile for the screws but what kind of a bit should I use for drilling the holes?

I never use a stud finder as they are usually unreliable. The best bet is to measure off of a receptacle which should be nailed to a stud. A masonry bit will penetrate wall tile. There was a trick to keep it from walking but can't remember what it was. I think if you put a peice of tape on first then start your bit on it, it won't walk. Be carefull when tightening up the screws so as not to pop the tile loose from the wall.

My suggestion if possible would be to make a free standing shelf that sits on the floor.

Dave.
