Kitchen Cabinets -Birch or Oak?

I'm doing a complete kitchen reno and am making new cabinets. These will be painted white.

Is one type of wood easier to paint than the other?

Oak is typically NOT a good wood for painting. It's grain size is too deep, requiring a lot of sanding, filling and priming for good paint results.

Yep--oak is not the best choice for paint---

Birch---soft or hard maple ---poplar--would be better choices.

Make some phone calls to hardwood suppliers----you may save a lot over buying wood from a lumber store----

Your location might get you some suggestions from members in your area---

Thanks.

I'll be buying the doors at a "discount" type lumber store and there only two options - either birch or oak.

My only experience is with oak doors, but my parents stained them.

Good move---making the doors often costs more than buying them already made----

For the face frames and other cabinet parts, any of the woods that I mentioned will work well---

Good luck---many of our members have good cabinet making skills---If you need any help or suggestions ---ask away----

Since you're asking about birch or oak, I am thinking you want to use plywood to make the doors? If you paint these, you will not see any of the grain. Might as well use cheaper veneer such as luan or paint grade ply. One way is to use very thin paint, used to be called pickling, and finish with urethane coat. Am not a fan of this finish, because I always think they look half done.
If using plywood, you have to look for flat plywood out of the store. You can't make flat doors out of curved plywood that was shelved wrong. You may have to visit several lumber yards, not the big box stores.
