Kitchen Cabinet Crown Molding

I am considering adding crown molding to my kitchen cabinets. Currently, the distance between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling is 12.5" which seems like a lot to me. Is that too much? What is optimal?

I am looking to do a two piece, perhaps two tone molding.

Any thoughts?

What does the distance above the cabinets have to do with your molding choice? The size of the molding would be based on the room size.
I'll make a assumption that the molding matches the cabinet finish? If that's the case you would either attach it to the cabinet top or you would have applied a matching soffit cover and applied the molding to the soffit/ceiling interface.

Thanks Ron.

The room isn't very large, just about 100 sq. ft., 10x10.

The cabinets are frameless, so my thinking was to install a nailer strip along the top of them. As I mentioned, I am thinking of doing a two tone, the cabinets are a very light color, but the room has darker brown accents, so the thought would be to install a dark vertical trim piece and then install a lighter crown molding to match the cabinets.

Ultimately, and perhaps obviously, we'd like the molding to reach the ceiling, hence I thought the distance between the cabinet and the ceiling might be important.

Whenever I've had a soffit of, 12"+/- with a crown molding, I've either installed a soffit cover that matched the cabinets with the matching crown or the soffit was painted and the crown was also painted.
It's just a personal choice. You just want to make sure the crown molding is in proportion to the space. If the setup you choose doesn't work for you visually after it's up a while, you can always make an adjustment. Painting would be the easiest modification.

Thanks Mike, that's a pretty nice look!

So, for a small room, 100 sq ft, what is a good size crown molding height?

3 1/2? Buy some samples and a roll of double faced tape. Put them up and see.
