I gutted my old kitchen should I install the backsplash subway tile prior to installing cabinets?

All the cabinets need to be installed as well as the counter top. How else would you know where to start and stop the tiles?

I agree with you but my husband thinks we can place cabinets and measure then install without cabinets being in the way.

Not going to happen. So what do you do when it ends up with a gap?
Cabinets most often need to be leveled because the floors and walls are never level, or plumb once you set the counter top the tile will be off.

I think you already know your husbands limited usefulness.
Pay attention to the advice and do what you usually do with your husband.

Has he ever installed cabinets before? Little bit more to it then just screwing them to the wall.
If he trys doing that then the faces where they meet will not line up.
